Give 100 U.S. Patients Life-Changing Hand Surgery

Summary

This project will give free hand care to 100 patients in 8 U.S. cities, providing life-changing hand surgery, therapy, and resources to restore injured hands to fully-functioning hands. For these patients, access to this care means returning to work, being able to provide for their family, and having the joy of complete mobility.

Challenge

In the U.S., as many as 28.2 million persons under the age of 65 are uninsured. Many of these people are living with serious hand injuries or hand pain, unable to afford treatment. The 2015 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Report reported that hand injuries accounted for 40% of injuries that caused time away from work. There is a great need for free hand care in the U.S. These individuals need healthy, functioning hands in order to work, support their families, and contribute to a better society.

Solution

The Touching Hands Project's (THP) Hand Day provides free hand surgery and hand therapy to individuals afflicted with hand injuries and conditions. In 2018, this project will provide 100 free hand surgeries across 8 (soon to be 10) U.S. cities for those who would not receive surgery any other way. The individuals are provided with post-operative, follow-up care to ensure healthy recovery.

Long-Term Impact

THP's Hand Day will provide free hand surgeries and hand care in 50 U.S. cities within the next 5 years. This means countless individuals who can return to work, provide for their families, and contribute to their communities.
