James R. Andrews M.D., a former president of the American Society for Sports injuries (AOSSM) initiated the STOP campaign to curb injuries in youth sports. STOP stands for Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention, the campaign's main focus is to develop a comprehensive public outreach program on the importance of sports safety. Statistics show that the United States has 30 to 40 million youth athletes, according to "Safe Kids" 3.5 million kids under the age of 14 received medical treatments due to sports injuries, another 2 million high school athletes are injured due to sports. Improper technique, ill fitting equipment, and training errors are only the beginning of a long list of problems that may lead to sports injuries.
